Fish
stories are so often exaggerations, but not this one.
My brother
Chris made his first cast from a boulder next to a small cliff
on the east side of the lake. Ten seconds later he pulled in
a beautiful brook trout. Ten minutes later I had a small fire
going and was cooking several of these delicious fish over the
flames. If you have never had trout cooked over a fire, you are
missing out on one of the most delicious dinners. We used flat
rocks as plates, and ate a couple brookies each.
"How
did you find this place?" Chris asked.
That's a story
for another time, but let me describe the place. There are no
roads or even footpaths leading to these lakes. You drive many
miles of sandy two-tracks in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, until
you see a two-hundred foot cliff rising up on the other side
of a small river. Park the car, cross the river on a log, and
start climbing up the rocky slopes to the left of the cliffs.
If you use your topographical map and compass well, it will take
you less than thirty minutes to get to the first lake, nestled
among the rocks and pines, maples and firs.
Okay, you have read this far,
